The measurement of D/H ratio in alkenones and their isotopic heterogeneity

چکیده
Previous paleoenvironmental studies reported the dD values of a mixture of coeluting alkenones. Here, we present a semi-preparative normal-phase high-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (NP-HPLC–MS) method for purifying long chain (C37 and C38) unsaturated methyl and ethyl ketones (alkenones) on the basis of chain length and degree of unsaturation. The method was applied to purify alkenones in suspended particles and surface sediments from a site in Chesapeake Bay, eastern USA. The hydrogen isotopic composition of diand triunsaturated C37 and C38 alkenones differed significantly on the basis of chain length and the degree of unsaturation, demonstrating the importance of gas chromatography–isotope ratio-mass spectrometry (GC–irMS) analysis of individual alkenones for accurate paleoenvironmental reconstruction. Constant fractionation factors between alkenones with different chain length but the same degree of unsaturation (aC37:2—C38:2 and aC37:3—C38:3 1⁄4 1:01) and those with the same chain length but different degree of unsaturation (aC37:2—C37:3 andaC38:2—C38:3 1⁄40:97) in all samples suggest that the values may represent hydrogen isotope fractionation associated with elongation and desaturation during alkenone biosynthesis. 2008 Elsevier Ltd. An efficient method for isolating individual long-chain alkenones for compound-specific hydrogen isotope analysis.
Hydrogen isotope ratios (2H/H or D/H) of long-chain unsaturated ketones (alkenones) preserved in lake and marine sediments hold great promise for paleoclimate studies. However, compound-specific hydrogen isotope analysis of individual alkenones has not been possible due to chromatographic coelution of alkenones with the same carbon chain length but different numbers of double bonds. متن کاملThe effect of temperature, salinity and growth rate on the stable hydrogen isotopic composition of long chain alkenones produced by Emiliania huxleyi and Gephyrocapsa oceanica
Two haptophyte algae, Emiliania huxleyi and Gephyrocapsa oceanica, were cultured at different temperatures and salinities to investigate the impact of these factors on the hydrogen isotopic composition of long chain alkenones synthesized by these algae. Results showed that alkenones synthesized by G. oceanica were on average depleted in D by 30‰ compared to those of E. huxleyi when grown under ...
متن کاملA Survey on Current Methods of Carpal Height Ratio Measurement and Suggestion of a New Method
Background & Aims: Two famous methods are commonly used for the measurement of carpal height ratio. Both methods are performed on anteroposterior radiogram and have some shortcomings. We are going to introduce a new method for measuring this index in lateral view of the wrist radiogram' Methods: This cross-sectional and case-control study was conducted on 100 anteroposterior and lateral radiogr...
متن کاملChemical and Isotopic Diversity of Organic Particles in Chondrites: Parent Body
Introduction: Insoluble organic matter (IOM), the main organic constituent in chondrites, has been extensively studied after HF/HCl isolation techniques. Bulk isotopic compositions and elemental ratios show variations between chondrite groups, whereas they are quite homogeneous within each class [1]. Recent isotopic measurements by ion probes have revealed that IOM is heterogeneous at the sub-m...
متن کاملMarked decline in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations during the Paleogene.
The relation between the partial pressure of atmospheric carbon dioxide (pCO2) and Paleogene climate is poorly resolved. We used stable carbon isotopic values of di-unsaturated alkenones extracted from deep sea cores to reconstruct pCO2 from the middle Eocene to the late Oligocene (approximately 45 to 25 million years ago). Our results demonstrate that pCO2 ranged between 1000 to 1500 parts per...
